I Shudder

Paul Rudnick further establishes himself as one of America’s preeminent satirists with this winning collection of essays, which includes new material interspersed with some of his wickedly funny contributions to The New Yorker. I Shudder: And Other Reactions To Life, Death and New Jersey is vintage Rudnick, finding the author at his most prankish and good-naturedly scathing.

The screenwriter behind In and Out, Sister Act and Addams Family Values offers keen, occasionally biting observations to such topics as life in New York City versus New Jersey, the dicey nature of show business, and crafty strategies for dealing with one’s family. As David Sedaris says, “There’s no book wiser or half as funny as I Shudder.”

Disjointed read
October 09, 2011

I didn't really appreciate the diary entries (and even skipped one or two), but the Hollywood tales more than made up for them. He's met some fascinating charaters and Paul has a flair for reconstructing conversations from decades ago.

Humorous Insights....but
December 13, 2009

Overall I Shudder was enjoyable, but I found it a bit disjointed. There were random chapters of a "...diary of one Elyot Vionnet." These chapters seemed to pop up with no rhyme or reason. I thought Rudnick could have created an entirely successful book on the "diary" chapters rather than using them as filler in I Shudder.
