The Red Garden

The bestselling author of more than 20 novels—including Practical Magic (the basis for the major motion picture) and the Oprah® Book Club selection Here on Earth—Alice Hoffman is one of our most distinguished novelists, and her sensuous brand of magical realism makes her books a joy to read and savor.

In The Red Garden, Hoffman pens a lyrical tale about Blackwell, a small Massachusetts town that boasts 300 years of history and a curious garden where only red plants grow. Beginning with its founding—and how an adept young woman helped the settlers survive the first winters—the book flits around in time, inviting us into each generation’s lives as they forge new beginnings, cope with tragedy, triumph against adversity and find love in even the strangest of places.

Exquisitely crafted and bustling with magic, The Red Garden is a transforming glimpse into small town America, presenting the reader with 300 years’ worth of passion, dark secrets, loyalty and ultimate redemption. It’s a tangled web of tales in which characters lives are intertwined by fate and their own actions. Delightful, compelling and utterly original, the book is as unforgettable as it is moving.

A good read

This story of the folks and folklore of a small town was a pleasant read. I enjoyed the stories and felt the whole was cohesive. I haven't read a lot of Alice Hoffman but will read more now.

Disappointed...
September 20, 2011

I think the description uses the correct term "tangled" as that's the feeling left after reading this book. I enjoy Alice Hoffman but this one left out the "magic" I was hoping for. I wouldn't recommend as your first book from this author!
