At Home

In his biggest book since A Short History of Nearly Everything, one of the most beloved and humorous authors of our time takes us on an epic journey through history, war, scientific progress and architectural design…all by taking a stroll around his house.

At Home begins with a simple realization: houses aren’t refuges from history; they’re where history ends up. Whatever happens in the world—social turmoil, the Industrial Revolution, new discoveries—eventually finds its way inside the home; look deeply enough at your house and you’ll see everything from the changes wrought by the invention of electricity to the effects of the guano trade on city life.

In his chapter on the bathroom, for instance, he regales us with tales of the rise and fall of personal hygiene, from the Romans, who elevated bathing to an art form, to Medieval times when people avoided water at all costs, to Benjamin Franklin, who liked to take “air baths” by basking naked by an open window, presumably to the consternation of his neighbors.

Also touching on the bloodshed caused by the spice trade, the intricacies of stair design and more, this is a fascinating look at why we live the way we do. It’s Bill Bryson at his best.

Such a Fun Read!
November 28, 2011

I love books that explain how we got what we have today. It's amazing how things evolve over time, from housing to names for rooms to technology. Author writes in a style that is easy to follow and doesn't bore you to death with the facts.

Bryson Does It Again
May 12, 2011

Bryson treats us to a travelogue of our own homes, tying historical events and transitions to the most common areas and features of the place we hang our hats. Laugh out loud funny, fascinating, sobering at times . . . a truly enjoyable read through and through.
