Paris in the first half of the 20th century was in many ways the center of European culture, and even when the Nazi tanks rolled in, the City of Lights was never fully extinguished. Within days, a peculiar kind of normality returned as theaters, opera houses and nightclubs reopened for business.
In And the Show Went On, Alan Riding focuses on this dangerous time and introduces us to the artists who lived it, including Maurice Chevalier, Edith Piaf, Pablo Picasso and Jean-Paul Sartre. How did they react to the occupation? Did they feel a moral duty as artists to defy the Germans? Exploring the decisions each made about whether to stay or flee, collaborate or resist, it sheds fascinating light on the realities of the occupation.

Exquisitely well researched. I couldn't put it down. Having witnessed and survived the occupation of Paris as a child, I relived, this time vicariously, one of the most troubling pages of history. Bravo, Mr. Riding.
