Your landlord may frown on your keeping a goat or a flock of chickens, but how can he complain if you bake bread, make strawberry preserves or grow your own produce (particularly, if you share the bounty!). Even if you're your own landlord, you can put the land you own to good use with all you'll learn in Abigail R. Gehring's The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Country Living. Anything you'd ever want to know about getting back to the basics is here. Practical, clearly explained instructions show you exactly how it's done, whether you want to learn the art of candle dipping and maple sugaring, or you want to take on building your own log cabin, generating your own energy or raising livestock. Color photos and hand-drawn illustrations.

Don't live in the country....yet...... but this book has a bit of everything I need to know to make it a more self reliant adventure. Touches on animal husbandry, gardening, crafting, canning and more. It lacks the depth of other books on each specific topic but gives enough information to get started. With over 700 pages of text, nice photos and web links I thought it worth the price.
