Cave Canem

Don’t call it a comeback: Latin may be considered a dead language, but it’s currently experiencing a renaissance. In this spirit, Oxford-trained classicist Lorna Robinson introduces readers to the wonderful world of Latin in Cave Canem!

Each chapter explores the beauty of Latin words and concepts through a different aspect of Roman life: from the language of home and garden, family and gods, to the classical Latin of the upper classes and of business, law and medicine; from the theater, literature and storytelling tradition to the so-called “vulgar” Latin of the street. The final chapter offers Latin phrases very much in use around the world today. This is a lively way to learn one of the world’s most fascinating languages!

A Delightful Romp
February 20, 2010

As a child, I had a very slight exposure to Latin, enough to enable me, in later years, to guess at a word's meaning from its resemblance to something I'd seen in my missal. This is a delightful romp that takes you through a Roman house and doesn't neglect the insulae occupied by the poor --believe me, if you lived in an insula, you most certainly DIDN'T want the penthouse! You can learn the origin and significance of the atrium and the peristyle, what made the life of a Vestal Virgin attractive (despite the hideous penalty for taking a lover), and how 'public acts' gave rise to the word 'republic.' Don't be shy--jump right in! It's as entertaining a read as you'll find this side of the graffiti on public buildings in Rome!
