When Julie Powell couldn’t stand the heat—in the form of an existentially meaningless job and a looming milestone birthday—she got into the kitchen. In a battered copy of Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Julie found her mission: In one year she would cook all 524 recipes and chronicle the results with unflinching (if frequently foul-mouthed) self-scrutiny—first in a blog, now in this irresistible book. Powell fights her way through aspics, sweetbreads and 60 pounds of butter; dishes about her friends, coworkers and long-suffering husband and follows Julia’s instructions with affection and attitude, making apocalyptic messes, epic scenes and some delicious discoveries about what it all means.

My daughter loved the movie; so I surprised her and bought her the book. I don't know if she's had time to read it yet.

I enjoyed the quirky character, could relate to her dissatisfaction with a job that did not engage her passion, but also felt there was nothing that kept me reading, other than a normal curiosity to see how it ended.
Her husband sounds like a saint. This may be funnier in the movie, but I kind of think not.

I think the most inspiring element of this tale is that Julie Powell did this in a crummy New York kitchen - nothing most of us every endure when even thinking about tackling such dishes that require so much preparation and multi-tasking. Four burners, no waiting! Small oven! Every bride-to-be who THINKS she wants nice pots and pans and bakeware should be required to cook 6 of these dishes in an apartment oven/range, maybe even an electric one for extra effort. When she masters this "4 lbs. in a one-pound bag" task, then she can ask for as many topflight pans as she likes! Wonderful story -
