Enzo is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift.
Now, on the eve of his death, he takes stock, recalling all he and his human family have gone through—and the difficulties they still face—and decides to make a heroic attempt to give them what they need the most.
Heart-wrenching, deeply funny and touted by NBC’s Today Show, CBS’s Early Show and Starbucks’s Book of the Month club alike, Garth Stein’s dog’s-eye-view novel The Art of Racing in the Rain is a story of family, love, loyalty and the human comedy...as only a dog could tell it.

This book was recommended to me by 2 people who both love dogs (and one of them also loves racing). I am a cat person, but I also love dogs and I loved Enzo's point of view. I was crying before I finished the first page - I couldn't stop reading - finished in 2 days and wanted to start all over.

Though I knew it was going to be sad...he wrote it in such a way that you were able to handle it. What a great read!!!

Impressed by great reviews prior to ordering this book, I was jacked when I opened my mail! Unfortunately, I had a serious injury, nearly losing my right leg the day after your book had arrived. I spent quite a while in the special long term orthopedic unit of Baptist Hospital in North Carolina. Fortunately for me Enzo became the best friend anyone could have possibly found at a time like that. Everyday was a struggle to find anything particulary meaningful and certainly nothing amusing. The entire medical staff - Any and everyone entering my room for even a moment of time learned of this great book. Some even stuck their head in just to ask, "What's up with Enzo today?" I hated to finish this beautifully written, joyful, touching, love-filled novel. The staff at Baptist were incredible. They all swore they were going out to buy the book. I wanted to do something really nice for them. So, I started a reading list of everyone who had said they HAD to read this book! The day I left, I gave the book that had meant so much to me, to one of the nurses. Inside the book was the list of others it was to be passed on to next. There were instructions accompanying the list of names. I asked that after reading it, each person sign it. When the list has been finalized it is to be mailed back to me.....as a momento of sorts. That was June 2009. When I last checked, there were quite a few additional names on the waiting list.....This is the sixth copy of "Racing" I've purchased, making sure I always have one on hand, for my library, or to pass along. Thank you Mr.Stein! To me "Racing in the Rain" wasn't simply another..book. It was something so special I WANTED to share this story with others....I continue to do so...

Loved this book! I disagree with the description, that Enzo is different from other dogs. Enzo, and all dogs, should be an inspiration as to how people should think and act. While the custody dispute didn't thrill me, I think it made a very important point in how life should be handled. I loved the ending and went back and re-read the beginning when I finished the book. Highly recommended reading!
