The Story of Edgar Sawtelle

Here’s a debut novel that landed on our desks and practically demanded to be read. The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is David Wroblewski’s gorgeously written, New York Times bestselling first novel. Nominated for the 2008 New Voices Award, it’s a tour de force of storytelling about a shocking murder, a boy’s coming of age and the ineffable bond between a dog and its human—written with a fiery love of language and a keen eye for American imagery. Edgar Sawtelle is a young mute who helps his family raise the Sawtelle dogs (a breed distinguished by its uncanny intelligence) in rural Wisconsin. It’s an arduous life, but a satisfying one until the arrival of his paternal uncle, Claude, a mystifying mix of charm and menace. When Edgar’s father unexpectedly dies, the grief-stricken boy tries to prove that Claude played a role in the death, but his plan backfires—spectacularly. Now forced to flee his home, Edgar must survive in the wild with only three loyal dogs as his companions. But his need to find his father’s killer turns him ever homeward, propelling the narrative with explosive energy that will have you breathlessly turning the pages until the final, extraordinary scenes.

Very Disappointing - in a word.....BORING
September 06, 2009

I think this is one of a very few books in my lifetime that I just put down in frustration and was never able to finish it. The fact that this was so highly recommended by Oprah prompted me to run out & buy it. And then the book just went quickly "nowhere". I was super disappointed, all of the hype surrounding this book indicated that it was simply awesome....and honestly, I never saw anything awesome about it at all.

A Journey of Dog and Boy
August 08, 2009

This author has a gift for exploring the minds of both humans and dogs. Dog lovers will find the breeding and training of Sawtelle dogs unique. They take on an almost human quality. His description of Almondine looking for Edgar needed a hanky. The journey of Edgar and his faithful dog companions made for an eagerness to read constantly thru every twist and turn. As Stephen King reported, I, too, could read this book again.

I love Edgar - and I am far from an animal person! He will win your heart for sure!

promising start, but then things got weird
June 05, 2009

I am so dispaointed in this book. The writing is elegant and honed, and the ntale promises to be a great American novel, then things get weird. Out of nowhere the Hamlet suplot creeps in, and the story unravels. I couldn't even finish the book. only made it to 3/4 of the way. I am SO disapointed. I skimmed to the end to see what happens, and ultimately this story is unbelievbale muck. Hamlet fans might enjoy the turn in the tale, but for me it doens't work because I don't se why the story has to take such a turn. Besides, Shakepeare already told the story.

Gone to the dogs

I could not finish reading this book, which is unusual for me. Unless you are really crazy about dogs and dog details, you too might have a difficult time keeping interested in the other story line.
