The Human Brain Book

Packed with vivid art, The Human Brain Book whisks us on an incomparable tour of this organ. A 24-page MRI atlas of the brain describes each component; we look at the brain’s role at the hub of the central nervous system and how our brains compare with those of other animals. This is followed by a look at the brain’s major structures and their functions, as well as brain cells and neurotransmitters. Other topics include the senses, movement and control, emotions and feelings, communication, memories and consciousness. Personality, aging and brain disorders are treated as well. A DVD features a clickable model of the brain and detailed animations.
The Human Brain Book will delight anyone curious about how we think.

damaged book with no recourse
January 19, 2010

After several emails to customer service and a letter mailed to Scientific American about the problem, I have not received any help whatsoever. My book came half the book completely ripped in a jagged form, all the way through the book, done during shipping. Neither the postal service or Scientific American will replace the book. I cannot read it because of the large GASH in the lower half of the book, cannot even turn the pages. So, no review. But I will NOT order one more thing from this company until I get a response from them! And I have spent a LOT of money on books with them so far. They lost a good customer. I didn't know that if something is not right with the order you are out of luck! maryruthgreer@comcast.net

Must have resource
January 05, 2010

During my grad life, I have read books and still reading. I received this book today, and never thought that a book so well written would not be a # 1 in the world. Folks if you are really serious in treating patients with dignity and professionalism, buy this master of art. The contents, DVD-Rom, etc..to mention a few will keep your cognitive adrenaline on the right track.

Spectacuar photos combines with useable directory

First, I have to admit to being a bit of a brain 'geek' these last few years as the information stemming from neuroscience continues to amaze. Depending on your needs, this book is a tremendous volume. Rita Carter (author of the excellent Mapping the Mind) provides an in-depth buffet of the history and findings about how our brains work, replete with full page MRI's and the like. THe book is laid out so that every two pages is a stand alone section which adheres to the usual layouts of books published by English publisher DK books. Each section is intersting, and often fascinating. If, however, you are looking for material recommending ways to utilize neuroscience for achievement (Eric Jensen, Jeffrey Schwartz, The Snaps Project, Norman Dodge, Sharon Begley, )or healing (My Stroke of Insight)you probably should look elsewhere. But, if you're like me, you'll get many enjoyable hours out of this book and its accompanying DVD)
