Raised in Qadhafi’s Libya, Neil MacFarquhar has developed what some might consider a counterintuitive take on the Middle East: though it’s viewed almost exclusively by Westerners as a war-torn landscape, MacFarquhar sees great warmth, humanity and generous eccentricity.
In The Media Relations Department of Hizbollah Wishes You a Happy Birthday, he sheds light on the unsung heroes who have pioneered political change in the Middle East. Characters include a Kuwaiti sex therapist and a Syrian engineer advocating a less literal take on the Koran. These are just two of the many people who realize their region is out of step with the rest of the world and are determined to do something about it—on their own terms.

This wonderful book gives a subtle look at the violence and repression we have all come to expect from the countries of the Middle East. It shows that the ordinary people in the region have a more "liberal" take on the dictates of Islam and are desirous (up to a point, anyway) for a more pluristic society. It also shows how many of them understand that their countries and governments are woefully behind the times, especially with respect to the lack of advances in, or even contributions to, science and technology.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants a more thorough glimpse into the mind-set of the people in the Middle East.
