Matchless

From the author of Wicked comes this delightfully modernist take on The Little Match Girl fable. Gregory Maguire’s Matchless envisions her sad lot in life entwined with the fate of a young boy, Frederick, whose hopes for a better future and unyielding optimism inspires him and his family to soldier on through tough times.

Whereas the original Danish legend is often interpreted as a rather ham-fisted metaphor for religious salvation, Maguire masterfully subverts the fabric of the tale to restore the magic of Hans Christian Andersen’s original vision. In Maguire’s hands, the story becomes a parable about transcendence, the permanence of human spirit and the continuity that links the living and the dead. Matchless rekindles the original story’s fire.

Quick light read on an old tale. Maguire always places a interesting twist to his storytelling.

Disappointed
January 23, 2010

I bought the book on the strength of the Wicked series and was disappointed that it was a very short reworking of the tale. It was to be a Christmas present for my daughter who turned me onto Wicked which we both enjoyed. For what it is worth, though, the book does change The Little Match Girl into a more hopeful story. Too bad the girl doesn't survive in this one, either.

A Twist on Little Match Girl
January 21, 2010

I thought the story to be very touching. It the tale of the little match girl with a twist that makes it a little bit happier than the original story. The illustrations are lovely. It is also a very short read but one that can be put back to read over again.
