As a boy growing up during the summers on my family's farm in Tennessee, I
learned from my father how to recognize the richest and most productive
soil: in a word, it's black. It's also porous and moist. But it was not
until much later in my life that I learned the reason fertile soil is black:
it's the carbon.
The soils of the earth contain between three and four and a half times as
much carbon-just in the first few feet-as do the plants and trees, and more
than twice as much as is currently in the atmosphere. With improved
agricultural and land management practices, we can significantly increase
the amount of CO2 that is pulled from the atmosphere by vegetation and left
sequestered in the soil, while enhancing agricultural productivity and food
security-and restoring degraded lands-at the same time. As with other
climate solutions, however, the success of this promising strategy depends
upon large-scale changes in long-established patterns.
When my father was a young man, the greatest threat to the productivity of
the land in America was soil erosion. Farmers and landowners in his
generation were enlisted by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in a nationwide
struggle to stop the soil erosion that had led to the Dust Bowl of the 1930s
and had left many farms cut with deep gullies, through which the best soils
for agriculture were washed away. To this day, I remember the lessons he
taught me. For example, when walking across the farm, keep an eye out for
the first hint of erosion; stop the beginning of a gulley before it can
start to deepen.
The battle against soil erosion and the degradation of soil quality on farms
in the United States is a success story. And by slowing soil erosion, the
U.S. has also begun to restore the carbon content of the soil. The crucial
layer of humus in healthy soils is made up, on average, of 58 percent
carbon. There are, however, new threats to the quality of soil and new
opportunities to sequester much more carbon in the soil.
More important, in much of the developing world-particularly in sub-Saharan
Africa-the degradation of soil quality continues to worsen and has reached
levels that threaten food security for hundreds of millions of people. The
loss of soil carbon in degraded African croplands has already exceeded the
magnitude of losses in the U.S. 80 years ago, just prior to the Dust Bowl.
Addressing this threat effectively can not only make African soils more
fertile and productive, it can simultaneously pull enormous amounts of CO2
from the atmosphere of the planet and sequester it in the soil as it is
restored to health.
From Our Choice by Al Gore
(c) 2009 Al Gore
Al Gore’s Our Choice is an affecting, inspiring call to action for those who want to do their part in solving the climate crisis. Gore, a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, has led over 30 “Solutions Summits” with respected scientists, engineers and policy experts in his search for answers to environmental issues currently facing our world. His latest book draws heavily on both the conclusions developed in these summits as well as his own independent research.
Gore makes an excellent argument for making bold decisions that will pave the way towards our goal of saving the Earth’s climate. Our Choice lays out the strategies he thinks should be the new foundation for worldwide policies, policies that would eventually create new jobs while stimulating the economy in the process. Al Gore uses his 40 years of experience as a student, policymaker, filmmaker, entrepreneur and activist to flesh out a meticulously planned, highly sensible course of action designed to lead us toward a healthier conscience, and a healthier planet. Informative, illuminating and exquisitely written, Our Choice is the blueprint we need for a comprehensive global strategy.

Al Gore is a hypocrite. If you believe his diatribe then you deserve to pay the outrageous "climate change" bill coming your way. Try studing the farmers almanack. It is issued every year and available locally or online. It has been published since 1792 and cost less than $6.00. You will find that there is only one thing constant with the weather and that is change. These swings from warming to cooling cycles have been occuring for centuries. If Al really believed the B.S. he is spinning then he would lead by example, not by using more energy or emitting more toxins than an average family could possibly consume/emit in 30 years. As to the response I read here, you people need to get a life. Those who are writing reviews do not need to blog or go listen to fox news. Just because someone voices a different opinion from enviromental fanatics does not give you the right to attack and label them. P.S. If your child is not 18 keep them off a shopping website as they are not old enough to purchase anything, as a responsible, caring and diligent parent you should know this.

This book objectively and scientifically lays out the destruction BY HUMANS, to our planet. It also gives real, doable, specific actions that WE can take to shift the impending suffocation and poisoning of Earth. Al Gore is brilliant, compassionate and hopeful... and is giving humans a real map to undo the damage. The pictures are powerful, the science is valid and footnoted, and the information is vital to all of humanity.
Read it.

This book is a great book and so was An Inconvient Truth. There actually is a TON of evidence as to what is happening as a result of global warming and evidence as to what we can do to stop and prevent it! There are pictures and devastating percentages and numbers showing the devestation that man is and has caused. It is sad that there are still people living in denial and still contributing to the problem but that is the way of the world and the way it goes with all serious social problems. The job to fix it is left to the few that are capable of change and sacrafice and that is how it will be and has always been. I can only hope that younger generations take heed and take even further action to fix the state of the world. And yes, the book is printed in recycled paper and so was An Inconvient Truth.

This is a great followup to An Inconvenient Truth. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Although scientists have said that Global Warming/Climate Change would help to cause erratic weather patterns; such as the recent cold and snow in Texas, and the lack of it in New York.....................Day to day weather patterns cannot necessarily be used to explain global climate change or global warming. Climate and weather are different. The main distinction between the two is the time-frame. Weather describes short-term atmospheric conditions in a specific place. Climate, on the other hand, refers to average atmospheric conditions over an extended period of time, such as decades or centuries.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Whether you agree with the Science or not, one thing we should all be able to agree upon is that this is the only Planet we have, so why not keep it clean?

I stick to the basic principles; For every action there is a reaction. I think it is very naive to believe that we have no impact on the world around us. Kudoos to Al Gore for addressing this once again.
